I recently asked myself why I care so much about high school football. The question is being answered, daily.
Things are in turmoil, in our nation. The economy is broken, the old tried and true methods of raising young ones are frowned upon or just singled out as plain old abuse. The world stage has lost respect for us and we continue to be lied to and, unfortunately, believe the lies. Things are truly going to hell in a hand-basket and I don't believe, for a moment, that I am being melodramatic, here. So, I need a safe haven. I need a place where I can go, mentally and emotionally, and forget about all the crap, that is reality, at this moment. High School football is that bastion for me.
It's not just high school football, either. It's the game of American Football, that I so dearly love. But, to immerse myself into football, at what is supposed to be its purest level (the high school level), is what I ultimately prefer. The young men growing and maturing... the parents having a sense of pride in what their young man is accomplishing... school pride... District bragging rights... State Championships... honor, respect and duty to one's teammates... all of this stuff is what I love about High School Football. All of this stuff pays huge dividends later on in life and high school football helps forge great men. That's why I love it.
I sat for two hours, last night, being lied to and given mis-information. I heard verbal jabs and accusations go both directions and found that many of the claims were either embellished or just plain lies. It made me want to go grab one of my helmets from my game room, put it on, buckle the chin strap tight, and absolutely knock the snot out the folks that were feeding me propoganda. That's when I realized that I needed to do something very simple and easy... change the channel. I wound up watching football.
