We loaded up the old (MIL) and the young (the kid's best friend) and headed West Saturday morning to see the game UTEP/ El Paso has been looking forward to since they found out it was coming.
Yes, we could have had a little more fun had we headed out Friday and joined in on the MASSIVE scale tailgating - tailgating like I have never even heard of before. But Permian was playing at home and well, no further explanation is necessary.
Got to town and traffic around the school at noon was already snarled. Every available parking lot within a couple miles of the stadium was completely jam packed with campers, canopies, pits, vehicles and people - thousands upon thousands of people. The kid told me they started up Thursday night! :O
Anywho, got the MIL (mother-n-law) and the hubbo settled in at the hotel. We visited with the kids and then 45 had to be back to the school for team meetings. I mentioned to the husband that we needed to get to the stadium pretty early, like three hours early. Apparently I was nagging him and being completely ridiculous. I just don't know what came over me. ;) So we hung out at the hotel until around 6 local time.
We loaded back up and headed into the fray. Needless to say (to anyone who has a lick of sense) parking was now non-existent within a five mile radius. Okay, that's a little exaggeration, but only because the actual mile we had to walk UPHILL from our eventual parking space to the Sun Bowl - felt like 5 FREAKIN miles. Thankfully all of the tailgating areas we cut across on our way provided quite a bit of entertainment. I would have taken pictures, but realized that no site I am a member of would have allowed me to post them. ; )
Anyway we made it to the stadium and the MIL and hubby didn't even need to ride in the ambulance to get there. There were a few uncertain moments, but they made it - an hour later. So here we are one hour before kickoff and the place to pick up Comp Tickets is even more chaotic than the tailgaters. There were three windows for comp tickets: Player Comps, High school coaches comps, and recruits comps. There were no lines only crowds of people pulsating toward the windows. Of course, you have the people who walk up to the front of this mass and push their way in.
Folks, you ain't seen ugly until you have witnessed El Paso fans (very few UT fans in this line) who are 1. afraid they will miss the pregame stuff and 2. forced to endure the hot box temps under those stands - simply because some idiot is taking too long at the window. This one guy is there for 20 minutes on the phone to someone trying to find out about his non-existent tickets. The crowd got real surly - real quick. So the DPS comes in and straightens out the lines, kicks out the cutters (we told them who they were muahahaha), and threatens anyone who has anything to say about it.
Thankfully the drama lasted less than an hour and we made it to our seats in time to see the pre-game festivities. This stadium was ROCKIN!!!! The team comes down through the stands into the field - that was awesome. Their band and dancing team were fantastic. Really, the whole thing was a well done show! El Paso proved they really wanted the big game. 53K were on hand in the stadium and I would venture about half that many were outside the stadium tailgating who didn't make it in the stadium... for whatever reason. haha!!
Since everyone who watched on TV missed the first quarter (for the most part) - you missed the best part of the game. I really thought the rout would start with UT's first possession. Our Defense is completely new - from the entire coaching staff to the scheme and most of the players. So, I wasn't hopeful for any kind of bright spots. But I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed the first three quarters. :P
Good job Coach Price - keep em headed in the right direction. Good job El Paso - you did a fantastic job showing up for this game. (Though they have an average attendance of 44K so that's nothing new for them.) Good job players - you have a long way to go, but have come a long way.
We had a great time and can't wait for the next one!!!!
PS. Honey, I know it's killin you to admit I was right about getting to the game around 4 or 5, especially since ... well... I was. But because I am a generous kinda gal, you don't have to say it. That little limp you have now is all the vindication I need. mwahahahahaha
